Cabinets are the single biggest line item in most kitchen remodels — and the decision that most defines the look and feel of the finished kitchen. Getting this choice right matters. Here’s a practical guide for NJ homeowners.
The Three Tiers: Stock, Semi-Custom, and Custom
Stock Cabinets
Pre-built in standard sizes, available immediately from home improvement stores. Cost: $100–$300 per linear foot installed. The upside is price and availability. The downside: limited sizes mean you’ll have filler strips and gaps, limited style options, and quality that rarely holds up in high-use kitchens. Fine for rental properties or tight budgets; not the right choice for a Morris County home where resale value matters.
Semi-Custom Cabinets
Built to order in a wide range of sizes, finishes, and configurations. Lead time: 4–8 weeks. Cost: $300–$650 per linear foot installed. This is the sweet spot for most mid-to-high-end kitchen remodels in NJ. You get significantly better quality, more design flexibility, and a kitchen that fits your space properly — at a price that makes sense for a $600K–$1.2M home.
Fully Custom Cabinets
Built entirely to your specifications by a cabinetmaker. Lead time: 8–16 weeks. Cost: $650–$1,500+ per linear foot installed. The right choice for high-end homes, unique layouts, or homeowners who want built-ins that look like they’ve always been part of the house. This is where Carnevale Construction’s in-house cabinetry work shines.
Framed vs. Frameless
Framed cabinets have a face frame attached to the front of the box. Traditional American look, slightly less interior space, strong and durable. Most common in NJ homes.
Frameless (European-style) have no face frame — the door covers the entire cabinet box. Cleaner, more contemporary look, slightly more interior storage. Increasingly popular in modern kitchen remodels.
Neither is objectively better — it’s a style choice. Match it to the aesthetic of your home.
Door Style: The Most Visible Decision
- Shaker — Clean, versatile, works in traditional and contemporary kitchens. The most popular style in NJ remodels by a wide margin.
- Raised panel — More traditional, ornate. Works well in formal kitchens in older colonial homes.
- Flat panel / slab — Minimal, modern. Works in contemporary homes; looks wrong in traditional ones.
- Glass front — Great for upper cabinets, adds visual interest, requires keeping interiors tidy.
Finish: Painted vs. Stained
Painted cabinets (white, off-white, navy, sage) are dominant in NJ kitchens right now and photograph beautifully. They show wear over time and require touch-ups.
Stained wood (oak, maple, cherry, walnut) shows the natural grain and hides wear better. Currently less trendy than painted but timeless — especially in more traditional homes.
